My Fathers Day Story
As we hit the halfway point of June, I feel it's important to take a moment to recognize the Father's and Father figures who've helped shape us into who we are today.
Some of the most important and fondest memories I have from my childhood are learning to use my Grandpa's ride-on mower. After spending the morning teaching me all about the machine, Pop gave me the opportunity to do the job "on my own"; even if he was never more than 15 feet away. Together, cut by cut, we chipped away at the summer growth and when finished, I’d experienced something new to me - pride in a job well done.
Most father figures it seems, put a high emphasis on attention to detail, the value of hard work and doing a job right the first time. My Pop was no exception. It’s my belief that these formative moments help us become the people we strive to be. They teach us the value of determination and focus and define our outlook going forward.
My Grandpa showed me with patience how to cut in a straight line and coached me through something hard. Though I was intimidated to learn at first, the confidence that was instilled in me from this life experience has helped shaped who I am.
Whether you've been a dad for 5 seconds or 50 years, or whether you’re a father figure like my Grandpa is to me, you are important. Your role holds value and what you do and say to those you influence holds weight.
Teaching even a simple life skill like mowing a lawn can leave an impact in someone’s life that’s greater than you may think.
Thank you for your character-building life lessons and your patience – especially when we don’t understand the impact those life lesson's have until were older.
Have a Happy Father's Day!
